Critical Reception
On the review aggregator blog Rotten Tomatoes, 75% of 12 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6 out of 10 stars.
A review in the Hindustan Times reported it to be a magnificent job, which had outstanding individual performances, a fascinating storyline, and incredible virtual effects. Namrata Joshi of The Hindu reported the movie to have started well, before struggling in the middle but recovering brilliance at the end, producing a catharsis and adrenaline rush.
Uday Bhatia of The Mint reported it to be a silly cartoon history, which borrowed its physics from Prince of Persia but consisted of fluent actions and impressive individual acting.
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV reported it to be a historically inauthentic work that ironed out any nuances in its depiction of a saffronized Hindu-Muslim binary; however, he stated the overall production to be brittle and supported by powerful individual performances. Tanul Thakur of The Wire reported it to be a job that had excellent cinematography but was greatly buoyed down by its ahistorical religio-nationalist propaganda, catering to the general saffronization of India.
Shubhra Gupta over The Indian Express reported it to deliver a “simplistic, dressed-up slice of the past” that smeared hyperbolic tales of Maratha bravery with a Hindu fervor. Sukanya Verma of Rediff reported it to be a mythical story of history with a bout of saffron fervor; individual acting and choreography of combat sequences were honored.
Rajeev Masand reported it to be a dubiously stereotyped mythical work, which demanded a hyper-nationalistic climate but had robust filmography, visceral battle scenes, and outstanding individual performances. A critic from The Economic Times applauded the visual effects, computer graphics, and editing of the movie, making it a must-watch movie.
Stutee Ghosh of The Quint reported it to be a visually stunning movie with strong individuals acting, despite its broad liberties with historical precision and problematic prejudices. Jyoti Kanyal of India Today rated 2.5 of 5 stars noting “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is an excessive and slow-paced ode to the great Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare.”
Reporting for the Firstpost, Devanesh Sharma rated 2.5 out of 5 stars and honored Kajol and Khan’s acting while criticizing Devgn’s characterization as the review noted”The leading man, though certainly an unsung warrior, as the title implies, comes across as rather one-dimensional, as Devgn fails to carry his character beyond the written word.”
Harshada Rege of The Times of India rated 4 of 5 stars and stated “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior scores on different counts – superior performances, powerful action, visual impact, and most of all, it unfolds a story from the pages of past that earned to be told, with just this sort of intensity, passion and vigor.”
Sify rated the movie 3 out of 5 stars noting “Tanhaji is substantially improved by its technical crew that has performed to make a splendid canvas for the cast to shine upon. It describes the story of a lesser-known hero from the chapters of the Indian past, which makes this an intriguing movie.”
Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times reported in her review, “Tanhaji is a full package. It’s superb, high on visual effects, and has powerful action supported by rock solid performances.”
Rohit Vats of News18 rated 3.5 out of 5 stars noting”Devgn and Khan provide that the viewers get sufficiently dose of high-voltage dialogues, along with engaging action scenes.” Nandini Ramnath of Scroll said, “Tanhaji loudly sings its hero’s recognition, making a thrilling spectacle when in battle mode and problematic when assessingthe dynamic between the Marathas and the Mughals.”
Avinash Ramachandran of The New Indian Express rated 3 out of 5 stars stating “In Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, we reach to catch iconic warriors of India shed tears copiously. We get to notice jingoism masked as Maratha’s valor. There are a bunch of things running for Tanhaji, but, deep inside, it is disturbing to witness such polarizing historical dramas.”
A critic from Bollywood Hungama gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars and said Tanhaji is an entertaining and paisa-vasool movie that would be valued by the groups and classes. Suparna Sharma of Deccan Chronicle rated 3 out of 5 stars saying “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, whose story is basically a march towards the battle, is not a bad movie. It is, in fact, especially entertaining when it is at war.”
A critic from Daily News and Analysis rated this movie 3 out of 5 stars saying “Watch it for the superb acting by Kajol and Khan who exceed this Devgn-led vehicle.”
