Critical Reception
Catherine Bray of The Guardian rated the movie 2 out of 5 stars and said, “It all adds up to a comic mixture of hagiography and limp movie-making, albeit made around a fine central performance.”
Anuj Kumar of The Hindu noted, “The movie tries to encourage Savarkar in the famous imagination by vilifying Gandhi through a stylistically mounted and carefully prepared portrayal”.
Rishil Jogani of Pinkvilla gave the movie 4 out of 5 and said “The life decisions of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar can have polarising opinions, but not the movie, that can be categorized as ‘peak cinema’. While one can’t argue the realism of everything delivered in the movie, this interpretation of Savarkar’s life by Randeep Hooda and the squad of Swatantrya Veer Savarkar causes for awesome, interesting cinema.”
In the review for Indian Express, Shubhra Gupta provided a rating of 2 out of 5 and described the film as “stridently one-sided, and, finally, reductive”.
Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 and noted “This one’s a polarising but strong biopic that tries to clear Savarkar”.
Dishya Sharma of News 18 rated the movie 3 out of 5 stars and noted “In a sea of patriotic movies that Bollywood has been releasing in few years, Swatantra Veer Savarkar is among the more promising ones. The production value of the movie and the performances keep you seated through the three-hour look. I hope it was edited well, for there were a few scenes that could have been accomplished away with. This would have provided the movie a lasting impact.”
The Koimoi assigned it a rating of 2.5 out of 5 and mentioned that the film can be categorized as “propaganda for elections” by a section due to its grouse against documented facts that have been newly seen in other recently released films.
Rohit Bhatnagar of Free Press Journal provided a rating of 2.5 out of 5 and noted “Randeep’s movie is a slow burner and it drains you with facts and figures but it is a well-intended project that might exactly thrill and appeal to history lovers.” The review sees the film to be “bothersome” and to have misinterpreted historical facts.
Sana Farzeen of India Today gave 2 out of 5 stars and mentioned that “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar turned out to be a shallow try. It can be only passed off as a very long, usually one-sided past lesson on the ‘neglected’ freedom fighter.”
Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times notes in her review that the movie “ends up being a one-sided narrative that’s not worried about giving a balanced outlook about the contributions produced towards India’s fight for freedom.
Prateek Sur of Outlook rated 2.5 out of 5 stars and noted that”‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ is a wasted action, to be honest. The performances of the other characters could have been raised and presented much more weightage than they presently have.
Not to ignore that it’s already too long and yet you feel that multiple angles have been skipped out. So, a chance of having the movie releasing two parts or likely as a web series would have been more useful.”
