Sanju is an Indian Hindi-language biographical comedy-drama movie directed and edited by Rajkumar Hirani, composed by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra under the banners Rajkumar Hirani Movies and Vinod Chopra movies.
The movie chronicles the life of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, notably concentrating on his drug addiction, detention for his association with the 1993 Bombay bombings, connection with his father, and acting career. Ranbir Kapoor leads as the main character, along with an ensemble supporting cast.
In a discussion with Hirani, he shared stories from his life, which the former discovered intriguing and encouraged him to make a movie based on Dutt’s life. It was named Sanju after the nickname Dutt’s mother Nargis utilized to call him. Principal photography started in the date of January 2017 and was covered up in the date of January 2018.
The film’s soundtrack was written by Rohan-Rohan and Vikram Montrose, with A. R. Rahman as a guest composer. Fox Star Studios obtained the distribution rights to the movie.

Arriving from a family of cinematic legends, East Indian actor Sanjay Dutt gets dizzying peaks of success – but even fights multiple addictions and other personal demons.

Critical Reception
Sanju obtained mainly positive reviews from analysts, with special recognition for Kapoor and Kaushal’s acting and Hirani’s direction. Swetha Ramakrishnan of Firstpost applauded the acting of the cast, particularly Kapoor, further noting, “The movie doesn’t try to solve Sanjay Dutt or explain his life. Neither does it attempt to whitewash his faults.”
Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama rated the movie 4.5 stars out of 5 and noted, “Sanju is a fun saga that combines emotions, humor, and drama in good doses. It is strong, engaging, emotional as well as compelling”.
Meena Iyer of Daily News and Analysis also gave the movie 4.5 out of 5, saying that “it’s an emotional roller-coaster that will offer you the pleasure of having read a bestseller.” Divya Solgama of Bollywood Times rated the movie 4.5/5 celebrities saying that “Sanju’ is an emotionally enriching knowledge which every cinema lover should see”.
Rachit Gupta of The Times of India gave the movie 4 stars out of 5 and mentioned, “Whether he’s dancing like a frantic man under the effect of drugs or he’s the broken, emotional impact just gazing blank, Ranbir performs a mixture of emotions and grey shades with flair.”
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV lauded Kapoor’s acting and Hirani’s direction but supposed that “other actors run to maintain up”, particularly Rawal. He ends the review by mentioning, as “an absolute must-watch”.
A reviewer for India Today notes, “Director Rajkumar Hirani, who has even co-written and revised Sanju, has carried over a few dramatic liberties, but it senses refreshingly candid.” He enjoys Kaushal as “[holding] his own against Ranbir’s superlative acting.”
Devesh Sharma of Filmfare admired the film’s humor and praised the reporting as “the power of the movie”. He mentioned, “Sanju signifies you celebrities are humans too”.
Gaurang Chauhan of Times Now gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5. While slamming the background score and the first half, he applauded the acting and the second half of the movie. Ankita Chakravarti of Zee News applauded the acting of the ensemble cast saying that “every cast is worth every alert” as “all the actors have done full fairness to their characters.”
Rajeev Masand, reporting for News18, rated the movie 3.5 stars out of 5, considering that the “shrewd writing and Ranbir Kapoor’s outstanding acting makes it hard not to sympathize with the protagonist.”
Rohit Bhatnagar of Deccan Chronicle marked Sanju as “enjoyable” while stating that it attempts to remove Dutt’s image.
Uday Bhatia of Mint was critical of Dutt’s characterization, while especially enjoying Kapoor’s performance. Rohit Vats of Hindustan Times respected Kapoor’s performance, but blamed the predictable nature of the script and songs which “break the narrative”.
Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express rated the movie 2.5 stars out of 5, saying that “Hirani is in top form obtaining all his reel characters to off the real characters, in the search of a solid, entertaining tale” but blamed the second half as to whether what had been left out of the movie would have completed it pleasingly.
Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost clarified Kapoor’s acting as “superb”, but was unhappy with how “startlingly dishonest” the movie was.
Nandini Ramanath of Scroll.in was impassive about the movie, writing, “In its uncompromising quest to deliver absolution, Sanju is no better or worse than numerous other biopics that have flooded Bollywood over the past few years.”
Sanju Bollywood Movies 2018 Songs Collection
The film’s soundtrack has 6 songs written by A. R. Rahman, Rohan-Rohan, and Vikram Montrose while lyrics are composed by Irshad Kamil, Shekhar Astitwa, Puneet Sharma, Rohan Gokhale and Abhijat Joshi. The movie score is written by Sanjay Wandrekar and Atul Raninga.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film’s producer was originally disappointed with music and visuals for two songs. Rather of re-shooting the scenes with the music, they chose to sign A. R. Rahman to write original songs to include in the same scenes.
Rahman was employed as a guest composer and has written two songs for the movie including “Ruby Ruby”, with lyrics written by his frequent collaborator Irshad Kamil. T-Series published the soundtrack album on 29 June 2018.
