Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is an Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy family movie released in 2023 that was directed by Karan Johar and composed by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy.
This movie includes actors like Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as a couple with contrasting personalities who choose to live with each other’s families for three months before getting wedded. Other cast in this movie are Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, and Kshitee Jog play their family members.
This movie is produced under Dharma Productions and Viacom18 Studios, the movie was revealed in July 2021, scoring Johar’s feature movie comeback after the musical romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).
The principal photography started from August 2021 to March 2023 in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir. The shooting and release were postponed by a few months due to Bhatt’s pregnancy. The music of the movie was written by Pritam and the cinematography was managed by Manush Nandan.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was published on the date of 28 July 2023 to positive reviews from critics. This movie was made on a production budget of more than ₹160 crores (US$19 million) and a marketing expense of ₹18 crores (US$2.2 million), it has made more than ₹355 crores (US$43 million) worldwide, appearing as the year’s tenth highest-grossing Indian movie and seventh highest-grossing Hindi movie.
At the 69th Filmfare Awards, the movie obtained a leading 20 nominations, like Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor (Singh), and succeeded in four awards, like Best Actress (Bhatt) and Best Supporting Actress (Azmi).

Flamboyant Punjabi Rocky and intellectual Bengali journalist Rani fall in love despite their differences. After facing family opposition, they decide to live with each other’s relatives for three months before getting married.
Critical Reception
On the review aggregator blog Rotten Tomatoes, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has an positive ranking of 82% from 22 reviews, with an average score of 7 stars out of 10 stars.
Anupama Chopra explained the movie as “delicious eye candy with a rebellious core”, and applauded the performances of the ensemble actors. Mayank Shekhar thought it “a top of the pop-culture moment” and especially glorified Ranveer Singh’s performance, adding that he “owns this role like nothing short of an unique rock star”.
Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama saw it a “well-packaged performer that has great merits to hit a chord with the youth as well as families”. Tushar Joshi of India Today called it a mild reminder of Karan’s legacy.
Dhaval Roy of The Times of India reported that it is “a full-on entertaining and sweet beloved story, with flashy and feisty characters presented to us in a well-wrapped shiny package”. The Telegraph’s Priyanka Roy marked it a return to form for Johar, terming it a “vastly delightful movie which doesn’t fail to be meaty and significant”.
Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com called it a “shrewd subversion of traditions and importance by the same man who popularised and glamorized its goodnesses to the handle”. Her associate, Mayur Sanap, considered that the movie “blends old charm with the newness of fresh ideas”. Reya Malhotra of The Week called it a feminist story of Johar’s own Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001).
WION’s Shomini Sen praised both Singh and Alia Bhatt for “salvag[ing] a predictable writing credibly”. Mint Lounge’s Uday Bhatia even praised Singh’s charm and energy for completing the movie”more fun than it has a request to be”. Conversely, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express overlooked it as a “loud and melodramatic movie” with “a lot of emotions, but slightly originality”.
Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in saw it as “flashy” “superior”, and arrogant its “overly long, tonally jittery, and stereotype-filled narrative”. NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee supposed that “the movie is a shiny but shallow family drama that uses acting obsolete methods to fill up contemporary, pertinent theories about the requirement to be concerned in love, loyalty and language”; however, he praised the work, especially that of Bhatt.
Internationally, Ryan Gilbey of The Guardian mentioned that “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is engaging in its tries to address the clash between progressiveness and tradition”.
IndieWire’s Proma Khosla called it “the kind of Bollywood delight viewers have been craving”, and applauded the work of the “genuinely talented actors”, particularly Singh, Bhatt, and Bachchan.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Hindi Movie Songs Collection
The songs of the movie is penned by Pritam and the lyrics are composed by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Pritam explained the album as a “homage” to Hindi movie music of the 1960s and 1970s. Saregama purchased the music ownership for ₹30 crore (US$3.6 million).
Johar termed it both a strategic and emotional conclusion, as Saregama (then-named HMV) had released the songs for his company Dharma Production’s early movies Gumrah (1993) and Duplicate (1998). The sale even permitted Johar to use Saragema’s catalogue of old Hindi movie music without buying extra rights.
The first single, titled “Tum Kya Mile” was published on the date of 28 June 2023. The second single, “What Jhumka?”, adapted from Madan Mohan’s 1966 song “Jhumka Gira Re”, was published on the date of 12 July. The third single, titled “Ve Kamleya” was published on the date of 18 July, and the fourth single, titled “Dhindhora Baje Re”, was released on the date of 24 July.
The whole album, consisting of 13 tracks, was published on the date of 31 July 2023.
