Pathaan is an Indian Hindi-language action thriller movie released in 2023 that was co-written and made by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films.
The fourth installment in the YRF Spy Universe, this movie includes actors like Shah Rukh Khan in the title role, alongside Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, and Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana in helping roles.
The story pursues Pathaan, an exiled RAW agent, who performs with ISI agent Rubina Mohsin to take down Jim, a retired RAW agent, who intends to attack India with a fatal lab-generated virus.
The principal photography started in November 2020 in Mumbai. The movie was recorded in different locations in India, Afghanistan, Spain, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy and France.
The musics in the movie were written by Vishal–Shekhar, while Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara provided the score. The movie was prepared on an estimated production budget of ₹250 crore (US$30 million).
Pathaan was theatrically published in India on the date of 25 January 2023, overlapping with the Republic Day weekend. The movie obtained positive reviews from critics.
The movie set many box office records for a Hindi movie, including the highest opening day, highest single day, highest opening weekend, and highest opening week for a Hindi movie in India.
It ultimately appeared as the highest-grossing Hindi movie of all time in India to that point and set records in all significant overseas markets.
Pathaan made more than ₹1,050.30 crore (US$130 million) worldwide, evolving as the second-highest-grossing Indian movie of 2023, the third-highest-grossing Hindi movie of all time, and the seventh-highest-grossing Indian movie of all period.
At the 69th Filmfare Awards, the movie obtained 16 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress (Padukone).

A Pakistani general employs a private terror outfit to perform attacks in India while Pathaan, an Indian secret agent, is on a task to form a special unit.
Critical Reception
Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the movie 4.5 out of 5 stars and termed the movie a “complete entertainer packed with action, emotions, patriotism, humor, thrill, and of course, the star capability of Shah Rukh Khan”.
Sukanya Verma of Rediff rated the movie a rating of 4 stars out of 5 stars and reported, “Shah Rukh Khan’s weathered intensity, grizzly charisma, and trademark wit lend Pathaan’s all-out, devil-may-care stunts a sense of intention that bypasses mindless acts of mayhem”.
Devesh Sharma of Filmfare gave the movie 4 stars out of 5 stars and called it a “visual spectacle” while even opining that the action choreography was “truly out of this globe”. Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and said, “Pathaan swings and strikes with all the style and confidence in the globe. It will be a difficult act to follow”.
Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and reported, “Pathaan has all the ingredients of a masala potboiler — slow-mo entries, iconic battle of good versus bad and most significantly a sexy-smoldering Shah Rukh Khan, who can oppose the right fight on and off the screen”.
Tanisha Bagchi of The Quint rated the movie a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and reported, “If Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s showdown in War kept you on the edge of your seats, Shah Rukh and John’s fistfights and blows are nothing short of whistle-worthy”.
Abhimanyu Mathur of DNA India gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and applauded the performances and score but termed some of the action stages as “over-the-top and incredible”. Ritika Handoo of Zee News rated the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and said, “There is not a single dull point in this YRF actioner. The action series between SRK and John is over-the-top ultimately mind-numbing”.
Tushar Joshi of India Today gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and said, “Shah Rukh is the heart of Pathaan”. Pooja Biraia Jaiswal of The Week gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars and reported, “Pathaan is a dishoom-dishoom joy ride between Khan and his completely beefed-up antagonist Abraham. The purpose is not to let the narrative drive the story forward, but to let the larger-than-life magic of its lead stars cast its outbreak”.
Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the movie 3 stars out of 5 stars and opined that it has “finally broken the provisions of an action film— non-stop action, influenced by glamorous leads, crowned by the guy who can protect the world, a high-octane set piece and an emo line at a moment”.
Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost gave the movie 2.5 stars out of 5 stars and wrote, “Pathaan is so considerably entertaining when it’s being entertaining, especially with a smashing Salman Khan cameo – that it is pleasing to overlook its play-it-safe politics”.
Sajesh Mohan of Onmanorama said, “Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan lays out an excellent red-carpet entry for Shah Rukh Khan into the YRF Spy Universe with its proper formula of high-octane death and logic-defying action sequences spiced with desh bhakti (patriotism) and Qurbani (sacrifice).”
Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times said, “Pathaan is your true-blue commercial, masala entertainer that’s not attempting to send across any dispatch or be a social commentary on the current state of affairs in the nation. It’s entertaining, non-fussy, and fantastic at the exact time”.
Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in noted, “The film’s most amazing blaster is its hero itself, discussing his well-oiled impishness, time-tested charm, and mesmeric screen existence for a cheesy but even entertaining save-the-nation exercise”.

Pathaan Hindi Movie 2023 Songs Collection
The soundtrack album for Pathaan included four tracks: two songs, “Besharam Rang” and “Jhoome Jo Pathaan”, written by Vishal–Shekhar and written by Kumaar, and two instrumental themes from the authentic score composed and written by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara: “Jim’s Theme” and “Pathaan’s Theme”. Apart from its original, the soundtrack album was published in Tamil and Telugu.
