Jai Bhim is an Indian Tamil-language legal drama movie released in 2021 that was directed by T. J. Gnanavel, and produced by Jyothika and Suriya under the banner of 2D Entertainment.
This movie includes actors Suriya, Lijomol Jose, and Manikandan with Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Guru Somasundaram, and Rao Ramesh in helping roles. The movie is about police bias and state violence against a marginalized society.
Jai Bhim is founded on a 1993 Cuddalore incident that concerns a legal case battled by Justice K. Chandru; it rotates around Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. Police charged Rajakannu and he later went missing from the police station. Sengeni pursues the help of lawyer Chandru to pursue justice for her husband.
The movie was revealed in April 2021, and principal photography started that month with the filming of sequences in Chennai and Kodaikanal. Production was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic; filming started in July 2021 and was concluded in September.
S. R. Kathir managed the cinematography and Philomin Raj was the editor. Sean Roldan wrote the film’s music and score. The movie title is a reference to a slogan tagline by followers of judge and political leader B. R. Ambedkar.
Jai Bhim was published on Amazon Prime Video, before Diwali, on the date of 2 November 2021 as part of a multi-film deal contracted by 2D Entertainment.
The movie received universal praise from critics, who complimented the story, performances of Suriya, Lijomol Jose, and Manikandan, direction, and social message. Many publications have listed Jai Bhim as one of the most pleasing Tamil and Indian movies of 2021.

A pregnant woman from a primitive tribal community hunts desperately for her spouse, who is missing from police custody. A High Court advocate came in support of finding her husband and wanted justice for them.
Critical Reception
Jai Bhim obtained critical praise. The script, acting of Suriya, Lijomol Jose, and Manikandan, direction, and technical elements were overpraised.
Ranjani Krishnakumar of Film Companion noted: “Jai Bhim is a solid movie held jointly by crafty writing, brilliant filmmaking, restrained work, and a true happening of the justice system restoring hope”.
NDTV critic Saibal Chatterjee rated the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars, noting: “The amalgamation of the lead actor’s charisma, the speed of the theme, and the force of the no-holds-barred storytelling outcomes in an immersive and riveting movie that calls awareness to the plight of an oppressed community flagging on the fringes of society”.
S. Srivatsan of The Hindu reported: “‘Jai Bhim’ is perhaps one of the boldest movies to have arrived out of Tamil cinema. It doesn’t dare turn its back on shooting where it hurts the most, and its politics is not considered down by the existence of a star like Suriya.”
Reporting for The Indian Express, Manoj Kumar R. rated the movie 4 stars out of 5 stars, reporting: “Suriya feels natural and very relaxed in the role of a firebrand advocate. It is as if he’s not just acting the lines penned by the director, but he acknowledges in every word and gesture he produces in this movie .”
Sowmya Rajendran of The News Minute also gave the film four out of five, writing: “As a courtroom drama and investigative thriller, depending on real happenings, Jai Bhim is head and shoulders above the average fare”.
M. Suganth of The Times of India rated the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars, reporting: Gnanavel offers us some amazing moments of defiance. Lijomol Jose is as calmly effective as Sengani, who gets a couple of exciting scenes when she turns down steps at a concession from cops.
Manikandan, too, is practical and stands out in the scene when he advises his men to not give in as that will result in their residents being impressed as criminals. The director even portrays the closeness between Sengani and Rajakannu charmingly.
Ashameera Aiyyappan of Firstpost rated the movie 4 stars out of 5 stars, noting: “Jai Bhim is hard-hitting and passionate. Unlike most retail star vehicles, the movie is decisively real. It means a profoundly significant story with incredible nuance, providing that the people are not concentrated to stereotypes.”
Hindustan Times’s Haricharan Pudipeddi reported: Jai Bhim even talks about caste-based discrimination, and it doesn’t attempt to sugar-coat things in the approach. One of the highlights of Jai Bhim is the courtroom series which has been recorded most realistically. Suriya fetches earnestness in his work and recreates the role of a lawyer with a lot of maturity, providing that his star image never arrives in the way.
It’s Manikandan, who leaves you stunned with a gut-wrenching performance. Most of his scenes are shot in the interrogation room and he brings out the helplessness of his character effectively. Lijomol Jose as the lone woman standing against a system that is rigged against her, is one of the best casting choices in recent times in Tamil cinema.
An analyst from Onmanorama rated the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars, noting: “Rather than being a mere courtroom drama, Jai Bhim is a much-needed film from the past that will be relevant in the years to come, with new hope and a new beginning”.
Janani K. of India Today rated the movie 4.5 stars out of 5 stars noting: “Jai Bhim is an essential movie in the history of Tamil cinema. It demonstrates how caste discrimination and unfairness kill people.

It’s what society requires right now.” Sudhir Srinivasan, reporting for Cinema Express, rated the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 stars, reporting: despite all the tries to make an engaging court experience, the movie fails to make strong lawyer adversaries for Chandru … And yet, for all these errors that prevent Jai Bhim from being an amazing movie, it’s still essential to note that this is an essential movie that documents, with passion and good choices, the oppression of a community.
It’s a movie co-produced by a star, who’s daring enough to nearly slide himself into the background.
Yes, he’s a rescuer in this movie, sure, but he is not of the henchmen-beating, heroine-advising, agency-robbing sort, and neither is he the center point of this tale. Though he’s a rescuer, you could claim that he’s even a ‘victim’ … of his good conscience. “It’s the only way I can obtain a satisfactory night’s sleep,” he says, describing his motivation to describe the vulnerable. If only our community created more such sufferers.
According to Harish Wankhede’s analyst in The Hindu, the protagonist is an Ambedkarite hero who works to save the life and dignity of the tribal people by embracing democratic and legal apparatuses. Further, the movie shows the victim Sanggeni not as a powerless and wretched spectator but as a noble claimant of equal rights and justice.
It equally concentrates on her brave fight against the strong establishment and encourages her as a parallel protagonist of the tale.

Jai Bhim Movie 2021 Songs Collection
Sean Roldan penned the movie score and soundtrack, and Yugabharathi, Raju Murugan, and Arivu penned lyrics. The five-track original soundtrack album was preceded by the singles “Power”, “Thala Kodhum” and “Sendumalli”.
The album was published through music-streaming platforms on the date of 1 November 2021, and the sixth song “Manniley Eeramundu” was published as a bonus single on the date of 15 November 2021.
