Rachit Gupta of The Times of India even rated the movie with four stars. Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com even rated the movie with four stars.
Livemint noted, “It’s a hard-won transformation – bohot hard – and it rings proper”. Anupama Chopra mentioned, “By the end, I was wiping tears and cheering furiously not only for Murad but for each one of these characters to discover pleasure”.
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV noted, “Gully Boy can be whole-heartedly praised for its craft, engaging characters and Ranveer Singh. He destroys the slow-burning rapper action. What’s more, he accomplishes it with a lot of power to limit.”
Composing for Film Companion, Baradwaj Rangan rated Gully Boy three stars out of five and discovered it to be “softer than anticipated, but hugely entertaining and beautifully completed”.
Ananya Bhattacharya of India Today gave the movie three stars out of five. Mayur Sanap of Deccan Chronicle even rated it three stars. The Wire felt the movie marketed with Bollywood tropes.
Manjusha Radhakrishnan of Gulf News gave the movie 4/5 and noted, “When he cracks down, you break down with him and that’s one of the biggest achievements of Gully Boy”. Among international reviewers, Lee Marshall of Screen International reported, “Singh breaks rhymes with the most reasonable of them in this energetic, entertaining movie”.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian rated the movie with three stars out of five. Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter praised Akhtar for her direction.
Anita Iyer of Khaleej Times gave the movie four stars out of five.
Jay Weissberg of Variety noted, “Zoya Akhtar’s most accomplished movie to date is a mainstream rap musical about a Muslim male from working-class Mumbai decided to break free from the strictures of anticipation and class, all filled up with great helpings of deftly composed hip-hop lyrics and a mostly well-woven narrative” including “Ranveer Singh in all his charms.”
Raja Sen of NDTV rated the movie 4 out of 5 stars and stated, “Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, an underdog story glowing a light on India’s incipient hip-hop subculture, is the foremost great Hindi movie of 2019 and a rousing celebration of spunk. The reporting is enthralling, the texture fantastic, and this world is a revelation.
Here are characters without room to breathe who describe themselves breathlessly, through a style of music that has forever belonged to the marginalized. Dissent discovers a way and a beat.”
