Bramayugam is an Indian Malayalam-language folk horror movie composed and directed by Rahul Sadasivan and together produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios. The movie includes stars like Mammootty, Sidharth Bharathan, and Arjun Ashokan. The movie includes details of sacred mystery, mythical, and folklore of Kerala.
The movie was digitally streamed on SonyLIV on the date of 15 March 2024. It acquired praise from critics and audiences, with recognition for the cast performances, cinematography, sound design, background score, and production design.
This movie was published on the date of 15 February 2024 in black-and-white format. The movie was a box-office success, grossing more than ₹85 crore, and became the third-highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2024. The movie even achieved a good result in the Telugu region.
The Principal photography started on the date 17 August 2023 and was recorded across locations such as Ottapalam, Athirapally, and Kochi. The filming covered on the date of 18 October 2023.

Bramayugam Movie 2024 Plot
In the 17th century Malabar, Thevan, and Koran evaded the grips of the Portuguese slave trade in Ponnani and ran to the east. At night, they camp at the banks of the Bharatappuzha River, but a Yakshi murders Koran. Thevan sprints away, finding an abandoned mana in the sunrise.
While robbing a coconut, he is known by the house’s cook. He is fetched before the Lord of the Manor, Kodumon Potti, who asks his whereabouts and upon realizing he is a “Paanan”, asks him to sing a song. He praises Thevan on the song and demands that he remain the night, despite his wish to leave. The cook, while offering Thevan his room, discourages him from asking queries about the house or the Lord’s background.
Over the following few days, he realizes from the cook that the Potti is a descendant of Chudalan Potti, who was given a demon helper, a Chathan, by the goddess Varahi. His ongoing torture of the Chathan hung him as a lunatic, and he moved on to destroy Chudalan Potti and his family. Kodumon Potti finally defeated the Chathan and chained him in the mansion’s attic.
One day, Thevan notices the cook excavating a grave in the backyard, probably for himself. Frightened, he attempts to escape but is incapable of doing so. He then discovers that he has lost his memory and that he has been entrapped in the manor for months.
The cook tells Thevan that the grave is not meant for him, but for Kodumon; the Kodumon downstairs is the Chathan in disguise, and he jailed the actual Kodumon in the attic and causes him insane, leading to his eventual death. The only method that the cook and Thevan could run the manor is by beating the Chathan by drowning an ever-burning lamp found in a secret chamber in the granary and then trapping the beast in a special chest.
During an opinion, the cook thieves the key to the chamber from the Chathan’s waist. He unplugs the chamber and blows out the lamp, causing the Chathan weak. Thevan and the cook put fire to the Chathan’s disguised form, and the creature inside appears.
The cook, now admitted to be Kodumon’s criminal son, tries to place the ring that will provide him command over the Chathan but is controlled by Thevan, who thinks that the ring’s power will corrupt him. The two begin fighting while the fire kills the manor and it collapses over them.
Thevan is guided walking out from the ruins of the mana but he is struck by the cook. During the effort, the cook learns that it is not the real Thevan but the Chathan in disguise. Frightened, the cook sprints out into the forest and reaches across a Portuguese soldier while crossing a river.
Considering that it’s one of Chathan’s tricks he shoots the soldier only to get gunned down. A battalion of Portuguese soldiers appears from the forest, travels the river, and parades towards the manor, while the Chathan is seen walking through the forest carrying the ring.

Critical Reception
Reviewing for the portal The News Minute, Sukanya Shaji said, “The heart of this monochrome horror nail-biter is, of course, Mammootty. Even as Potti causes your stomach to churn in disgust, Mammootty causes you to like to clap for his versatility as an actor. Arjun Asokan and Sidharth Bharathan possibly have more screen time than Mammootty, and make reasonable use of it, though some locations make you believe that the characters could have profited from the skilled craft of more seasoned actors.”
The New Indian Express’ Vignesh Madhu gave 3.5 out of 5 and reviewed, “While Bhoothakaalam saw Rahul skillfully enduring psychology and supernatural elements, he combines folklore and horror in Bramayugam to make a scary atmosphere where nearly every point is an event.
Nirmal Jovial from The Week gave 4 out of 5 and said, “Bramayugam has a significant dependence on visual storytelling, but its memorability isn’t derived from visual schemes or jump scares. Rather, it’s the detailed world-building orchestrated by Sadasivan, with considerable help from Ramakrishnan, within a limited yet evocative setting, that delighted this reviewer.”
Firstpost gave the movie 3 out of 5 stars and reviewed,”What drives the movie home is the performance by the lead actors. Mammootty is running all out with his out of box options because this is likely the most sinister, and frightening character that I have noticed him portray. Everything about this movie is experiential. Beginning from the dark insides of the theaters to the sound and music in the movie. It is supernatural how beautifully all elements of the film movie together to get this feat.
Janani K of India Today gave the movie 3 out of 5 stars and declared, “‘Bramayugam’, with a fascinating story, grants you an immersive experience. And Mammootty attacks yet again”. Deccan Herald’s Arun Antony gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars and reviewed,”Arjun Ashokan wonders as the pagan but Siddharth Bharathan stands out as the cook. Overall ‘Bramayugam’ creates a lasting impression and anyone who is a lover of ‘Tumbbad’ should observe it”.
Anna Mathews of Times of India gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, “The script, the direction and art direction enables the eerieness and pushes the movie scary. But the story with bits of class politics and religious philosophy occasionally lacks a flow and does not make things very precise.”
