Atrangi Re is an Indian Hindi-language romantic fantasy comedy-drama movie released in 2021 which was directed by Aanand L. Rai and composed by Himanshu Sharma. This movie is produced by T-Series Films, Colour Yellow Productions, and Cape of Good Films, the movie contains actors like Dhanush, Sara Ali Khan, and Akshay Kumar.
The movie narrates the story of a girl called Rinku who is in love with a magician called Sajjad. She gets forcefully married to Dr. Vishu. Vishu shortly falls in love with Rinku but the love triangle conveys more mystery when Sajjad shows up.
The movie idea was created by Rai in the year 2013, after the release of Raanjhanaa. He designed the screenplay with Sharma, researching the subject of the sophistication of human emotions, especially love, and was sure to cast Dhanush given the relativity of subject, script, and time but the rest of the casting was eventual.
As the project was officially declared in late January 2020, the recording process started in the date of March 2020 and was finished in March 2021, despite losing six months of recording in between owed to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The movie was shot across Varanasi, parts of Bihar, Delhi, Agra, and Mumbai, and a few locations in Madurai, and Karaikudi.
The score and soundtrack album were written by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics composed by Irshad Kamil. The cinematography and editing were completed by Pankaj Kumar and Hemal Kothari, respectively.
After being postponed numerous times from its release dates, as a result of the nationwide lockdown due to the Corona, the makers premiered the film through Disney+ Hotstar on the date of 24 December 2021, thereby not releasing it in theatres.
It was even dubbed and released in Tamil under the title Galatta Kalyaanam. The movie obtained mixed positive reviews from critics, complimenting the unconventional plot, performances of the lead actors, direction, soundtrack, and score, but slamming the incoherent screenplay and performance of the overall storyline.

Critical Reception
In his review for Filmfare, Devesh Sharma made a verdict: “an extraordinary love story buoyed by some fine acting and hummable music. Aanand L Rai has discovered his rhythm again with this fun movie which even packs a message”. He gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5.
In a review for the Hindustan Times, Monika Kukreja said it was “a refreshingly diverse and unusual love story that so beautifully smashes through the clutter”.
Critics based at Bollywood Hungama rated the movie 3 stars out of 5. They declared: “In the entirety, the movie rests on a very strange plot. But it manages a pertinent topic, that is, mental health which is attacked with sensitivity. Furthermore, the acting, the musical score, and many well-executed scenes turn the movie into a watchable fare.”
Hiren Kotwani, in his review for The Times of India, gave 3.5 out of 5 stars, he wrote: “While there are parts of the movie that will leave you baffled and curious for more details, it’s not to say that the film doesn’t entirely entertain. Here’s a unique story at hand, an interesting team of actors, a refreshing soundtrack, and some fine performances.”
In his critical review for Koimoi, Umesh Punwani gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 and said: “The intelligence of Himanshu Sharma’s script is that it doesn’t depend much on ‘the twist’ as it goes on building to one soul-fatiguing climax.”
Prateek Sur, a critic at Outlook Magazine, commented”The twist is the triangular love story is what creates it worth a see”.
Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com rated 3 stars (out of 5) to the movie stating”Between its glamorous state of denial, hastily concocted back stories, questioning scientific explanations, Om Shanti Om-esque high drama of a climax and a zigzag love story, Atrangi Re is as charming as it is foolhardy.”
Critic Manohar Basu while reviewing the movie for Mid-Day, gave 2.5 stars out of 5, stating”Atrangi Re is absurd. It is mind-bogglingly frustrating, particularly in the first hour, due to its confusing and contrived plot […] While respecting Rai’s courage to try a complex movie that’s so out-of-the-box. But what his movie lacks is an in-depth learning of mental health disorders — schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, which in 2021 is both naive and inappropriate.”
Avinash Ramachandran of The New Indian Express mentioned: “Atrangi Re too works with an all-encompassing love that crosses all physical and mental limits. Just like all their movies, the idea too is a charming one even if it borders on the old-fashioned.
However, despite solid actors, brilliant music, and spectacular visuals, this period around the successful collaboration bypasses the target by quite a distance.” He rewarded the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV awarded the movie a score of 2 stars out of 5 saying: “Atrangi Re, demands an unconscionable degree of generous suspension of doubt as if it lets go of all semblance of logic. The fake storyline is planned to tug at our heartstrings — all it does is trip from one difficult-to-digest situation to another to show the depth of Rinku’s love for Sajjad and the strength of Vishu’s resolve in a ‘special’ love triangle that for the most part runs round in baffling and boring circles.”
Anupama Chopra of Film Companion noted: “The story takes surprising turns. It hopscotch across the country and connects on myriad subjects, while the movie is about the transformative power of love. Aanand and Himanshu glorify the purity of emotion and the beauty in Atrangi or eccentricity. The aim is laudable but the outcome is a bit of a mess.”
Rahul Desai, reporting for the same website, panned the film, stating”The movie is the kind of bewildering disaster that almost circles failure into an art form.”
Critic Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express stated “The film was meant to be a meaningful magical mystery tour but ends up as a misfire”.
Anuj Kumar of The Hindu mentioned: “In a bid to move beyond the prominent, director Aanand L Rai has bloated a lovely little thought into a contrived confusion, along with a troubling depiction of mental illness. Even Dhanush can’t preserve this weird take on love.”
In his review for Mint, Uday Bhatia said the movie was “messy and incoherent, which boldly moves to places it has no thought how to run from”.
Atrangi Re Hindi Movie 2021 Songs Collection
A. R. Rahman wrote the original soundtrack and movie score to Atrangi Re with lyrics composed by Irshad Kamil. Rahman said that he made the soundtrack with the on-screen and off-screen personas of the lead actors in mind.
He also curated the songs and scores with Rai’s vision of bringing villages to life and delivering an international perspective. As a consequence, he performed on folk-classical based compositions for the movie songs. The music mirrors the moods and emotions of the characters as the movie plot travels across India.
The songs “Chaka Chak” and “Rait Zara Si” were released as singles, before T-Series released the seven-song soundtrack album on the date of 6 December 2021. The release overlapped with a promotional launch occasion held in Mumbai with the attendance of the cast and crew, and a musical concert by Rahman and his team.
The album got a positive response with Financial Express summed up several critics’ reviews, naming the soundtrack “heart-touching music generated by veteran music composer A. R. Rahman”. Rahman succeeded IIFA Awards for Best Music Director and Best Background Score.
