Bollywood Hungama offered 4 out of 5 ratings and mentioned, “a contemporary and an advanced take on relationships from the master storyteller Karan Johar”.
Raja Sen and Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com respectively gave 4 out of 5 and 3.5 out of 5 and said, “Thank you, Karan Johar for this movie touches like a sob. He has enhanced massively as a storyteller, this movie is more polished and secured than anything he’s accomplished before.” and, “As obvious by his body of work, Karan Johar has a sweet place for this attribute, in the splendidly romantic and richly enjoyable Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.”
Nihit Bhave of The Times of India gave it 3.5/5 and mentioned it, “a stunning-looking movie that isn’t bereft of logic”.
Rajeev Masand of News 18 presented the movie 3.5/5 stars and mentioned, “Despite the occasionally mawkish undertones and the blatant shot at touching manipulation in its final act, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil offers you a hero that makes you care. I guess you’ll be a slobbering mess at the end of the movie, a puddle of tears when the lights come back on. Johar understands how to accomplish that. It’s a talent that’s remained with him even if his grammar has altered.”
Subhash K. Jha of Deccan Chronicle placed 2.5 out of 5 and mentioned, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is one good-looking movie with actors who display human beauty.” Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times gave 2.5 out of 5, expressing”Ae Dil Hai Mushkil delivers little in terms of story and fails to get the audience to sympathize or sense for the characters and events in the film.”
Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave 2 out of 5 and declared, “Johar is incapable of going the additional mile, hope that Johar will arrive up with something fresher and sharper the next time around.”
Mike McCahill of The Guardian gave 2 out of 5 and said, “Despite disagreement over the casting, Karan Johar’s romance has a collapse of nerve about Hindu-Muslim relations.”
The Hindu mentioned, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is the most delinquent in the label of cinema that isn’t so much as plot-driven as it is concentrated on characters, relationships, and interactions.”
Reuters said, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has neither gravitas nor the pleasure to be worth recalling.”
