12th Fail is an Indian Hindi-language biographical drama movie released in 2023 which was directed, produced, and composed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It is founded on the 2019 eponymous non-fiction textbook by Anurag Pathak about Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame severe poverty to evolve as an Indian Police Service officer.
The movie contains stars like Vikrant Massey as Sharma, alongside Medha Shankr, Anant V Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Priyanshu Chatterjee.
It was theatrically released on the date of 27 October 2023, 12th Fail acquired widespread critical praise and appeared as a sleeper hit, grossing more than ₹69 crores (US$8.6 million) worldwide on a ₹20 crore (US$2.5 million) funding. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, it won 5 awards, like Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor (Critics) (Massey).

IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma bravely adopts the idea of restarting his academic journey and reclaiming his future at a place where millions of students try the world’s toughest competitive exam: UPSC.

Critical Reception
12th Fail obtained critical acclaim. On the review aggregator blog Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of 11 critics’ reviews are favorable, with an average rating of 6.8 out of 10.
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV rated 3.5/5 and said “It’s an authentic portrayal of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer’s life, 12th Fail is a thought-provoking and delightful movie. The screenplay delivers a sympathetic story. It bypasses any sort of extravagance to drag every last bit of drama from the bump and fall of the man’s journey.”
Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day rated 4 stars out of 5 and mentioned the movie”This is the India story!”.
Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times said in her thoughts that 12th Fail is a must-watch to understand not only the hardships and emotions that UPSC scholars go through, but even sheds light on the widespread education in our system, something that Chopra succeeded hearts at with 3 Idiots (2009).
Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated 3/5 and wrote that “despite the background music and the occasional mood spikes, 12th Fail remains, for the most part, a movie that cleaves near to ground truth. With characters that construct you feel that they’ve walked off the street.”
She says, “It’s not just the main characters, but the numbers of the young who gather in the hot spots teeming with coaching centers, such as North Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar: all these multitudes, filling into small rooms, far away from their homes, packing day and night to get through the exams in the expectancy of evolving something more than who they are, is such an India tale.”
Deepa Gahlot of Rediff.com applauded the acting of Vikrant Massey and articulated “If Vikrant Massey does not succeed in a National Award for this movie, it will be unfair to a performer who has worked such unalloyed brilliance.”
Dhaval Roy of The Times of India rated 4/5 and said in his thought that 12th Fail is an amazing movie that is admiringly suggested, with almost every scene over its 147 minutes leaving you feeling inspired and surprised. Bravo to Chopra for making sure each character in the movie is offered their best chance.
Bhavna Agarwal of India Today rated 4/5 and mentioned: “Vikrant Massey passes with flying colors on performance sheet”.
Anuj Kumar of The Hindu reanalyzed the movie and noted “12th Fail movie review: Vidhu Vinod Chopra produces yet another hug of expectancy that is more intense than magical.”
Sneha Bengani of CNBC TV18 checked the movie, noting”Vikrant Massey powers through this amazing tale of perseverance”.
Gunjan D. Bidani of Zee News provided 4/5, writing “Not to be hyperbolic, but 12th Fail might be simply excellent. To see 12th Fail correctly needs fortitude. Goes without stating that the movie at its root is a deep deprivation of human fundamentals. The arc of Vidhu Vinod Chopra-directorial is an everyday barrage of study pack, tricky social dynamics, menial jobs for food, and raw spillage of emotions.”
Sajesh Mohan of Onmanorama in his thinking noted “The soundscape, meticulously prepared by Manav Shrotriya, strengthens the aches and joys of Manoj’s journey. The path Manav uses and reuses background noise disappearing in and out to separate Manoj and his emotions even in congested scenes add a meditative focus.”

Shantanu Moitra writes the music for the movie while Swanand Kirkire and Raftaar compose the lyrics. The film’s background score by Moitra, using sitar and flute, was motivated by the score by Pandit Ravi Shankar in the Bengali movie Pather Panchali (1955).
